A Mathematician Reads the Newspaper is on the readers' list of the Random House Modern Library's compilation of the 100 best nonfiction books of the century. One of the many topics considered in the book is the hyperbole and silliness of such lists. An author's vanity prevents me, however, from subjecting this particular list to any very withering scrutiny. Whatever the list's limitations, I'd like to believe that its number 46 is clear evidence of the readers' great perspicacity.
