It is with great sadness that we report the passing of our colleague Professor Janos Galambos. Janos earned his Ph.D. in his native Hungary under the direction of Alfred Renyi in 1963, and was on faculty at Temple from 1970 to 2012. An expert in probability and statistics, Janos was a member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, the Spanish Royal Academy of Engineering, and was also a fellow of the Institute of Mathematical Statistics.
Professor Daniel Szyld has been elected President of the International Linear Algebra Society (ILAS) for a three-year period starting March 1st, 2020.
ILAS is a membership organization which supports research and educational activities on all aspects of linear algebra. These include regular meetings and conferences, along with several publications, most notably the Electronic Journal of Linear Algebra. Congratulations!
Professor J. Paulos wrote an op-ed piece that is featured in the NY Times. You can read more here.
Supported by a MAA-SUMMA (Mathematics Association of America Strengthening Underrepresented Minority Mathematics Achievement) grant held by Profs. Irina Mitrea and Maria Lorenz, nineteen students from the Philadelphia High School for Girls along three Temple students explored knot theory, graph theory and more at MoMath this past weekend.
Professor Benjamin Seibold will lead the Temple team as part of the recently funded Department of Energy CIRCLES Project. Along with Temple University, this project brings together researchers from UC Berkeley and the Institute of Transportation Studies Berkeley, Rutgers University-Camden, University of Arizona, Vanderbilt University and the Tennessee Department of Transportation to pursue connected and autonomous vehicle technology to smooth traffic, calm congestion and reduce fuel use.
