We discuss the art of paper folding and how modern day artists use geometry and topology to create incredibly complex origami sculptures. Additionally, we talk about the applications of origami such as the deployable solar array currently used in space crafts.

Wednesday February 15, 2017 at 16:00, Wachman Hall 1036Weekly Meeting- Game Night
One of our members will give a short talk about the game Brussel Sprouts. We discuss the solution of the game and how the proof of the solution uses concepts from topology, specifically planar graphs and Euler’s Characteristic, that allow us to predict the winner and the number of moves in each round. We also brought out the old classics of Blokus and Set.

Our Treasurer (Hussein) will give a short lesson on the basics of LaTeX. This included how to begin a document, creating equations in LaTeX, labeling, numbering, and more!

During this meeting we sign up volunteers for Temple University’s Sonia K. Day in April. Together, we will discuss what kind of topics we might like to lecture about and started to create our lesson plan.

This Wednesday AWM will be holding another Game Night. In addition to classics like Set and Rummy, we will be trying out games with mathematical strategies, like Hex, Nim, and Order and Chaos. We hope to see you on Wednesday at 4 pm in Wachman 1036.

This is a great opportunity for our members to be exposed to many different types of math topics in a fun and educational manner. Additionally, we will be able to see how mathematics can be cleverly applied to many aspects of our everyday life.

We invited several Temple University Alumni back to discuss what they have done after graduation and where their mathematics degree has taken them. Many undergraduates have questions about what they can do with a mathematics degree, and this event will help attendees to get the answers they need.

Our members will have a chance to learn about mathematics through lectures and hands on activities throughout the day. Additionally, there will be plenty of opportunities to network with mathematics professionals and enthusiasts.

Saturday April 29, 2017 at 08:00, Temple UniversitySonia Kovalevsky Day
The AWM student chapter will give an interactive lecture to girls in grades 5 through 8 on Game Theory. We are projected to have 80 girls in attendance. We hope to convey the joy and excitement that comes with studying mathematics and to inspire the next generation of female STEM professionals.
