(This assumes the lost days I'm traveling will be made up somehow.) Plan is therefore (assuming 2 days/week) to have 24 = 60*2/5 meetings, each 1.5 hours long. Assuming once every 2 weeks a decent portion of 1 class is spent going over homework solutions, that is 18 lectures plus 6 homework reviews. Each of the 6 homework sets will be about 5-6 problems each, hence the total # problems is 30-36. POSSIBLE LECTURES AND ASSOCIATED READING Here's 22 possible lectures right here (not nec in this order): 2 survey of quantum / classical mechanics; decoherence [lecture notes by me, papers by Moyal, Feynman, Nelson, Zurek] 1 survey of relevant computer science: decidability, TMs, complexity, algorithms, dynamic programming 1 Information/Entropy, survey of statistical mechanics [Jaynes] 2 Reversible computing: Feynman & Benioff ballistic computers; Bennett chemical computer; Athas thermal computer; "adiabatic" CMOS logic; Bennett's space/time tradeoff. [Bennett, Athas, Fredkin, Margolus, Toffoli; discussion of my & Feynman's ideas about incorporating noise and "heat leakage" and not-total reversibility] 2 bounds on memory and info flux; Bekenstein's bounds; invisibility application [papers by me; Bekenstein] 1 Church's thesis meets N body problem [paper by me] 1 survey of VLSI theory [notes by me; Chazelle-Monier; Brent-Kung] 1 classical error correcting codes & info theory [Spielman; main theorems and some example codes] 1 reliable computing with unreliable computational elements [Pippenger; Spielman; Maggs; me] 1 quantum computing: shor factoring algorithm; quantum matrix mult [Shor; DiVincenzo; me] 1 quantum computing: grover algorithm and boyer-brassard analysis [Boyer et al; Grover] 1 quantum computing: other stuff (why won't work? implementation approaches?) [Cirac-Zoller; Monroe et al; Kane; Chuang; Cory et al] 1 quantum error correcting codes & information theory & fault tolerance [Schumacher; Shor et al; Preskill] 1 quantum teleporting, purification, crypto, money, cloning [Wooters/Zurek; Mayers; Bennett et al] 1 Josephson junction electronics; superconductivity; RSFQ logic; reversible circuits [Likharev] 1 actual analysis of a computational/physical problem [notes by me] 1 mechanisms made of rigid parts & their computational power [paper by me] 1 molecular tinkertoys? [paper by me] 1 decidability of quantum mechanics?
