Instructions for taking the Math 74 examinations:

1. Go to the MSRC (room 13, Curtis Hall). At the sign in desk, tell them you are there to take Dr. Chein's exam. Check any books and papers you may have with you. You may keep your calculator and use it during the exam. Ask for scrap paper, if you want some. You may not use scrap paper except as given you at the Center desk.

2. You should be directed to a particular machine. If not, ask which machines are for use with Dr. Chein's exam. If you know how to use netscape or internet explorer, go to url

http://math.temple.edu/~msrc/student.htm

and sign in, entering your last name, your first name and social security number. (If you do not know how to use netscape or internet explorer, ask for help from Center staff.) Left click on "submit".

3. A version of the test will appear. Each question on the test is randomly generated from a pool of questions, so it is highly unlikely that any two people will get the same test or that any person will get the same test twice, although a few questions may overlap. There are 33 questions on the test, each of which is very similar to a question on the sample test or a part thereof, with the exception that the test is multiple choice. You must get 29 or more correct in order to pass (28 or more on your third attempt only).

4. Mark one box next to each question by placing the mouse cursor in the box and left clicking.

Be careful not to miss any questions. Questions in which more than one box is marked or in which 0 boxes are marked will automatically be marked as incorrect, so you might as well take a guess is you have no idea.

5. After you have answered all the questions, left click the 'submit your answers' button. You will immediately be told which questions you answered correctly and which were incorrect. You may make a note of the numbers of the questions which you answered incorrectly on a piece of scrap paper, but nothing else must be written on the paper. You must return the remainder of your scrap paper to the check-in desk when you leave the room. They will check to see that the only paper you keep contains nothing but the list of questions which were incorrect. You should then visit one of us during our office hours and we will once again review relevant problems until you have learned the necessary material.

6. You must take the exam at the msrc on one of the designated machines, and you must sign in at the desk. You make not take the exam more than once in any day. Failure to observe these rules will result in a wasted attempt, as the attempt will count but the results will not.

7. You may have up to three attempts at the exam, and your best grade will count. All attempts must be completed no later than Monday, February 11.
