Volumes of knot complements

Abstract: A diagram of a knot, projected to the plane, defines a 3-manifold: namely, the complement of the knot. This manifold typically carries a unique hyperbolic metric, with a prescribed volume. Intuitively, more complicated diagrams should correspond to larger volumes. I'll describe several results that make this intuition more rigorous.
